Don't let your associates skip the rep

A split scene in a warm law office: on one side an associate passively copying finished work from a glowing screen, judgment fading; on the other, an associate arguing and editing while a warm amber AI employee hands over only the routine grunt work

There’s a version of AI in a law firm that quietly makes your associates worse. Every brief handed over whole. Every argument generated and filed with barely a read. Every research memo copied without a second thought. Two years in, you have a team that can run the machine and can’t build the case.

The firms that win the next decade won’t be the ones whose people lean hardest on AI. They’ll be the ones whose people stayed sharp.

The rep you don’t notice skipping

Skill decay is silent, which is what makes it dangerous. You don’t feel the judgment leaving. Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon researchers studied knowledge workers on exactly this question and found that the more people trusted the AI, the less critical thinking they did. Confidence in the machine, weighed against confidence in your own judgment, trades one for the other.

For most jobs that’s a productivity question. For a lawyer, the judgment is the job. An associate who has never sat with a hard motion and worked it out has skipped the reps that build a partner.

Job versus gym

Some work exists to produce a result. Some exists to build the person doing it. A first-year drafting their tenth motion is doing both. Hand all ten to a model and you get the motions and lose the first-year.

The move isn’t refusing AI. It’s knowing which work is the gym and protecting it. Routine filing, formatting, first-pass extraction, the drudgery that was never building anyone’s judgment: hand it off without guilt. Argument, strategy, the read of a witness, the judgment call on whether to settle: those are the reps, and you keep them for the humans.

Two paths for a junior associate: on the left, every task handed to AI and copied whole, the associate's judgment fading, labeled ALL REPS SKIPPED; on the right, the AI employee takes the routine grunt work while the associate keeps the argument and strategy, judgment growing, labeled RIGHT WORK HANDED OFF

An AI employee that keeps you sharp

This is the line we build to. Clerko takes the grunt work, the parts that never built anyone’s judgment, and leaves the thinking with the people whose names are on the door. It drafts so the associate edits and argues instead of staring at a blank page. It handles the volume so your team spends its hours on the work that actually makes lawyers.

Judgment is the one thing that doesn’t get cheaper as the models improve, which is the whole reason average just got cheap and the reason your work can’t afford to sound like everyone else’s. Someone still has to steer, and that someone is you.

Hand the machine the reps that never mattered. Keep the ones that made you a lawyer. That’s the firm still standing when average work stops being worth paying for.
