You are the glue

A small-business owner standing between an inbox, a calendar, a CRM, and a quote pad, carrying pieces of information from one to the next, while a warm amber AI employee takes over the carrying

Watch how a normal task moves through a small business. A call comes in. Someone writes it on a pad. Then they type it into the calendar. Then they copy the details into the CRM. Then they open the quoting doc and retype half of it again. The work isn’t any one of those steps. The work is carrying the same information from one place to the next, by hand, all day.

That carrying is a job. In most small businesses, nobody was hired to do it, so it lands on the owner.

The work between the work

This isn’t a small tax. In its research on how work actually gets done, Asana found that knowledge workers spend about 60% of the day on “work about work”: chasing information, updating tools, copying details between systems. Only the rest goes to the skilled job they were hired for.

Read that number again with your own week in mind. More than half the time is the glue, not the craft. The estimate, the visit, the conversation that only you can have, gets squeezed into what’s left.

Why it lands on you

In a big company there’s a layer of people whose whole job is that coordination. In a small business there isn’t. So the moving-things-around work flows uphill until it hits the person who can’t hand it off. That’s you.

That’s why owners feel busy all day and still behind. You’re not slow. You’re doing two jobs at once, the one you’re good at and the one that’s just shuffling information from box to box. The second one never shows up on an invoice, so it stays invisible, but it eats the day.

Hand off the glue, keep the craft

Here’s the part that matters. The glue work is exactly what an AI employee is good at. It doesn’t get bored moving a phone order into the calendar and then into the CRM. It doesn’t forget the last step because a customer walked in. It carries the information from box to box, every time, the same way.

What’s left for you is the part that was always yours: the judgment, the relationship, the work a customer would notice if you stopped doing it. That’s the trade. You don’t hand off your business. You hand off the carrying.

It’s the same question we keep coming back to, which job to give up first. We wrote about how to choose it in which job do you hand to AI first, and about the hidden bill you’re already paying for it in you’re already paying for the employee you haven’t hired.

You became the glue because there was no one else to be it. That’s no longer true.
